The technium
Concept introduced by technologist and futurist Kevin Kelly
The "technium" is humanity's system of interconnected technologies.
No technology stands without the others (e.g. takes tools and machines to create computers, and now computers to create those tools and machines, and so on).
The technium isn't culture because it is a "persistent system with agency"—it has biases toward action.
Thus Kevin Kelly asks the question: what does technology want? What does the technium favor?
What might emergent properties of the technium be? While we have only one modern technium to look at, one property seems to be: replication. Life copies itself, and so does technology.
