OODA Loop

A model of the decision-making cycle: Observe, Orient, Decide, Act

  • Observe: gather information and establish the situation at hand
  • Orient: synthesize observations and reflect on course of action
  • Decide: make a decision on the action to take
  • Act: carry out the decided-upon action

In context, the priorities are generally to speed up one's own OODA loop (react to new information faster) and to disrupt the opponent's OODA loop (break their rhythm)

Concept originally developed by US military strategist John Boyd, often applied to business/strategic thinking
