Laban Movement Analysis

Framework for describing and understanding movement, based on the efforts of Rudolf Laban, a movement theorist/choreographer/dancer. Has applications in dance, music, theatre.

Movement is broken down into four component parts:

  • Direction (either direct or indirect)
  • Weight (either heavy or light)
  • Speed (either quick or sustained)
  • Flow (either bound or free)

Combined, these components produce The Eight Efforts:
